Shinji and Masaru are two class mates used to bunk off school. Their daily routine is made of small racketing, long hours spent in the café and endless conversations about one thing and another. Masaru is more the leader and Shinji the follower. After a quarrel with another school boy, Masaru decides to take up boxing. But the irony of fate is that Shinji, whom Masaru forced to join the boxing club, is more gifted than him and now even given the opportunity to become a professional boxer. Then Masaru decides to start a new career: gangster. Though heading in opposite directions, the two of them experience broken dreams and the harshness of life.
Kids Return is a partially autobiographical, sweet and sour portray of the Japanese youth in the nineties. The film is sustained by the music composed by Joe Hisaishi.
