The destiny of a family unfolds to the rhythm of nature, the cycle of the seasons, and the life of a river. “During the summer of 2016, I returned to my hometown to do research for my writing. In my memory, Fuyang was a small, quiet, and rather uninspiring town. But the longer I stayed there, the more surprised I was by the constant transformations taking place… I realized how fortunate I was to witness this immense and moving transformation of the town. Carried along by these currents, these waves of change, each person, each family is deeply connected to their environment, which inevitably affects their inner world. It is their daily lives that the film gradually reveals, like unfurling a contemporary painting, which I would title Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains… China and the West have their own artistic aesthetics. Nothing is better or worse, there are simply differences.” Western painting seeks to express space, while traditional Chinese landscape painting attempts to capture the passage of time in order to preserve a record of something universal: the eternity of time and the infinity of space. – Gu Xiaogang
