She said her name was Wan Quiwen… “I always try to capture the atmosphere of the places I film. To render it authentically. To do this, I almost always modify my scene on location before shooting. When everyone on set is focused on finding that authenticity, it truly fascinates me. The story itself is always a bit commonplace. For this film, it’s simply about a man searching for a woman. But what I wanted to capture was the emotion. During filming, I forced myself not to shoot overly explanatory scenes. I realized they would only lead to pure narrative… Filming is always very difficult.” I need to feel threatened, almost as if I have to escape death to keep creating. Often I think the film is ruined, and yet the next day a new idea comes to me. It resurrects it, gives it a new life.
