In Luomu, a picturesque village that seems almost untouched by time, preserved from mass tourism and small enough to explore in thirty minutes, Bai arrives at a guesthouse with a three-year-old postcard sent by her ex-boyfriend Wang, bearing the mysterious words “Twilight in Luomu.” As she wanders around town with the card in her hand, she finds traces of Wang in various places. Her plans for a short, quiet stay are quickly disrupted by the locals and visitors: Liu, the discreetly charming owner, who loves wine and philosophical conversations, her boyfriend Huang, and his drinking buddy Peng. As the search progresses, the film slows down, inviting silence, observation, and waiting. Bai realizes that the purpose of her quest is not only to find Wang, but to find herself, to explore what his absence has left her with—this emptiness, this suspension, this fading light. Zhang Lu offers a meditation on the theme of “in-between”: between presence and absence, between love and abandonment, between city and countryside, between light and twilight.
