Why is the Sky Dark at Night ?
by Kelzang Dorjee - Bhutan
Pitch
Seventeen-year-old Dema, quiet and unassuming, leads a monotonous existence in Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. She toils away in a butcher shop, her days punctuated by the routine of gestures and the harshness of daily life. Across from the shop, a dark alley and a bare wall become a stage where her past and present are replayed like a fragile reflection. Through fleeting encounters with her customers and passersby, Dema gradually discovers her city and her own destiny. And in this theater of shadows and meat, amidst the splinters of flesh, the splashes of blood, and the shards of knives, her unborn child glimpses a world it will never truly know. And yet, Dema, she, keeps moving forward.
