Exiled - FONG JUK

by Johnnie To - Hong Kong
FOCUS ON HONG-KONGESE CINEMA

Pitch

In Macau in 1998, Wo has distanced himself from the underworld and leads a peaceful life with his family. But four hired killers from Hong Kong, former "colleagues" come to his house. Two of them have been given orders to murder Wo. Set just before the handover to China in 1999, ‘Exiled’ by Johnnie To is both a political allegory, a comedy on friendship and a philosophical action film in the tradition of J.P. Melville featuring inventive action sequences.

"This film doesn't pay homage to any film director in particular. I made it inspired by all those who marked my young years : Sergio Leone, but also Sam Peckinpah, King Hu and Akira Kurosawa. I like directors who tell powerful stories in which men find themselves trapped in desperate situations." Johnnie To
