The Great Buddha +

Pickle is a night watchman in a factory making bronze statues. His colleague, Belly Bottom, collects and recycles waste during the day. These two losers meet up at night to pore over vintage porn magazines while eating their noodles. The day their television stops working, they decide to look at the film in the camera fixed onto the Mercedes belonging to the boss of the small business which makes giant statues of Buddha.

“I always observe our society. Everywhere there are characters like Too Tsai in Taiwan, but you see them without seeing them, like ants. You look the other way, which doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Everyone has their own story, especially people like Too Tsai. It doesn’t matter whether they are important or not, they each have their own, special universe.”

Underlining the gap between the life of the poor and the world of the elite by switching from black and white to glamourous colour, The Great Buddha+ portrays in a dynamic fashion a corrupt village in the rural south of Taiwan with sincere empathy and whimsical humour.
