Tehran: a schizophrenic society in which sex, corruption and prostitution coexist beside religious proscriptions. In this busy metropolis, three women of character and a young musician make a bid for freedom by defying taboos. “I was born in Iran and lived there until I was 25. I’ve been living in Germany since 1995. I’m the only member of my family who lives abroad. I was nine years old when the Islamic revolution took place. I really felt its impact when girls and boys were separated at school. It was the first of many upheavals which were to follow. Obviously, I’m still very attached to Iran and my people, who possess great strength and have managed to preserve their dignity in times of trial. The fact of having done research and reflected on the complexity of Iranian society has made my relationship with Iran much more intimate... For this project, shooting in Tehran was obviously unrealistic. I’ve seen films shot in Morocco or Jordania, supposed to represent Iran, but I haven’t found that convincing. I choose rotoscopy because with animated films, it’s the technical procedures which make the character the most realistic.” Ali Soozandeh
