Gu Xi lives with his brother Gu Liang in a fishing village in northeastern China, on the border with North Korea. They lead a pleasant, well-ordered life, almost like a married couple. They work as a maid and a fisherman, respectively. When an oil spill threatens their livelihood, Gu Liang manages to find work through a friend. He also meets the alluring Qingchang, whose father is a powerful figure in the Chinese mafia. She brings joy, a touch of adventure, and a hint of luxury to their lives, but also brings about changes. Gu Xi struggles to accept the budding romance between his brother and the young woman.
