The Looming Storm - BAO XUE JIANG ZHI

Pitch
In 1997, a few months before regaining control of Hong-Kong, China was about to undergo great change… Yu Guowei, the head of security at an old factory in the south of the country, was investigating a series of murders committed against young women. While the police were at a virtual standstill, this investigation was soon to become a real obsession with Yu… even becoming his reason for living. “In my opinion, the year 1997 marked a decisive turning point in Chinese social history in the 1990s. Not only was Hong Kong given back to China, which had a profound influence on Chinese society, but also class barriers were forcefully set up …” It never stops raining throughout the film. “People living in the rain never get to feel the warmth of the sun. This wet, rainy atmosphere has a negative effect on their morale and is seen to be conducive to crime and malicious acts. This climate also corresponds to my impression of the social and economic changes which took place in China in the late 1990s.” Yue Dong
