Leïla and the Wolves - LEILA WA AL Z-ZI'AB
by Heiny Srour - Liban
Synopsis
Leïla, a Lebanese student, travels through time and space to refute the colonial and male-centric version of history presented by her lover Rafic. The only film to cover 80 years of history in the Middle East from a feminist perspective, Leïla and the Wolves excavates the collective memory of Palestinian and Lebanese women and reveals their hidden role. At the end of her journey, Leila realizes that patriarchy also oppresses men. "In Leïla and the Wolves, I covered eight decades of women's involvement in various historical circumstances, from the uprisings against British colonists in Palestine in the 1920s to their participation in the armed struggle during the Lebanese civil war in the 1970s and 1980s. It was a way of showing the high price women pay for their commitment. They are rejected by society and abandoned by their lovers, who prefer arranged marriages. They are doubly sacrificed, regardless of their political affiliation." Heiny Srour
