The King of Masks

Pitch

At the beginning of 20th century, an old man from Szu Ch’uan district carries on the tradition of street opera in Central China. He wears masks, and his skillful transformations into the king of monkeys, the emperor, or the lord of death grant him the title of King of Masks. He lives on his own with “General”, his monkey.
He can only teach his art to a boy. After the dismissal of his only son, he decides to adopt a small boy, an easy thing to do in a country where parents sell their children to survive. An affectionate bond ties the old artist and the child, until he discovers Doggie is a girl.
“The King of Masks”, which has won awards in many international festivals, is a family movie with a moving story, which, although it is set several decades ago, is unfortunately still a topical issue in China as in other countries in the world.
