Swimming Out Till the Sea Turns Blue - YI ZHI YOU DAO HAI SHUI BIAN LAN

Director Jia Zhang-ke interviews three prominent authors (Jia Pingwa, Yu Hua and Liang Hing from Jia’s Shanxi province) about the disasters they faced in their villages and towns, from the social revolution of the 1950s to the unrest of the late 1980s.
It is the final installment in his trilogy of documentary films on the arts, following Dong and Useless.

The writers in the film tell their own stories, tales that weigh on the minds of most Chinese people. I wanted the images to have a dignified, almost sculptural feel, and the 18 chapters to be structured as loosely as floating clouds.
