Pitch
Shanghai, a fascinating port megacity, has undergone tremendous upheavals since 1930 : political and cultural revolutions, murders, population flows. Eighteen people recall their lives in this constantly evolving city, their personal experiences unfolding like eighteen chapters in a novel.
"In mainland China as in Taiwan, the true nature of the events that have occurred in modern China has been concealed, covered up by the government... I felt an urgent need to know what was hidden behind the familiar narratives of official history. How did individual people really experience these recent events ? While I was sitting opposite the protagonists of my film, I realized that my camera was capturing that "dream of freedom" that was still shining in their eyes. And that moved me to tears."
