Ciao Ciao, an ambitious, young, Chinese woman, goes to visit her parents in her native village, nestled in the heart of the mountains. She wishes for only one thing: to return as quickly as possible to Canton, where she is starting a business with her friend Li Li, seeing no future for herself in the countryside. But her parents are getting old and they ask her to stay and help them. She hesitates and hangs about the village, unenthusiastically, waiting for the best time to make up her mind. This is when she becomes the object of lust and desire.
This story of a disillusioned woman, ‘Ciao Ciao’ draws the portrait of a lawless, violent, unguided China, torn between modernity and tradition.

There is no longer any room for feelings; it’s as if they had disappeared. This absence, this feeling of emptiness, made me write the story of Ciao Ciao, inspired by true stories.” Song Chuan
