Painted Faces - QI XIAO FU

by Alex Law - Hong Kong
FOCUS ON HONG-KONGESE CINEMA

Synopsis

In the 1960s, Master Yu created his own Peking Opera School in Hong Kong. His students were none other than Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao, three artists who revolutionized Hong Kong cinema in the 1970s and 1980s with their stunt-packed action comedies and martial arts films.

"‘Painted Faces’ was my first film. These boys, tens of them, underwent gruelling physical training as well as enduring discrimination in the hope of a better future... The mindset of these individuals, aware of the ordeals they had been through in the past and in the face of a totally uncertain future, takes on new relevance and meaning in today's society... But the saying "When God closes a door, He opens a window somewhere" is still true. These foolish children were stunt doubles and thanks to their perseverance and sheer hard work, they became international film stars. Their faith, hope and determination are a source of inspiration for all of us." Alex Law
