Echoes of the Rainbow - SUI YUET SAN TAU

by Alex Law - Hong Kong
FOCUS ON HONG-KONGESE CINEMA

Pitch

The Law family lead a simple yet happy life in Sheung Wan. The youngest son dreams of becoming an astronaut, marrying Petrina Fung and emulating his older brother's achievements at school and sport. Life isn't easy for the Laws but they don't complain. As long as there is food on the table and everyone is in good health, they are happy. Corruption, increasing competition, violent typhoons and illness will soon disrupt their routine in Hong Kong. They face bad news in the simplest manner: they try to stay as close of each other as possible.

Echoes of the Rainbow, which recaptures the childhood years of , the director, was the first Hong Kong film to win the Crystal Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 2010. It is a moving, melancholy, personal film which successfully captures the troubled social and political climate of Hong Kong during the 1960s. From beginning to end, every single frame of the film is steeped in nostalgia.
