Pitch

The story is set in China in 690 A.D. during the turbulent period corresponding to the rise of Empress Wu Ze Tian. Everything is ready for the crowning ceremony and the little town of Chang-An is dressed in festive finery. But a series of mysterious deaths threatens the inauguration of Wu Ze Tian.
The empress then decides to call upon the only man capable of solving the mystery : Judge Dee, back after eight years in prison for impudence and insubordination.
Inspired by the story of an authentic detective in Tang dynasty China, Detective Dee is the subject of a collection of cult novels (by Robert Van Gulik). This film by Hong Kong film director Tsui Hark was presented at the 2010 Venice Film Festival in the official competition.
