Boat People - TAU BAN NO HOI

FOCUS ON HONG-KONGESE CINEMA

Pitch

In 1978, Akutagawa, a Japanese war photographer, returns to Vietnam three years after his visit during the fall of Saigon in 1975. He is welcomed by the Bureau of Cultural Relations who accompany him in the investigations for his report on the living conditions of children after the war. He becomes friends with a young woman and, after having discovered the hidden face of the regime, decides to help her and her family to leave the country.

"Third part of Ann Hui's ‘Vietnam Trilogy’, after ‘The Boy from Vietnam’ and ‘The Story of Woo Viet’, ‘Boat People’ goes right back to the root of the problem by trying to answer the following question: Why do so many Vietnamese try to flee their country? What Ann Hui wanted to illustrate was not so much political repression as such but the human tragedy. And she did it in a courageous way." Chinesemovies.com
