Life is Salty

For the residents of Thone Gwa village in Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady Delta, life depends on the sea salt they harvest by hand using centuries-old methods. Ignoring the blisters that plague their bare feet, men and women trudge swiftly between the evaporation basins, heavy baskets of salt dan- gling from the yokes on their shoulders. As they hurry back and forth under the blistering sun, they yell colourful words of encouragement to each other.

Love Like Ours

Ko Aung Zay Yar, a Muslim, and his wife Ma Tin Tin Maw, a former Buddhist turned Muslim, have called the Ayeyarwady fishing village of Nga Pote Thin their home since before Cyclone Nargis struck in 2008. They may have survived that devastating weather event, but their love is clouded by her family’s disapproval of her conversion to Islam as well as the daily prejudice they face as the only Muslim family in this otherwise entirely Buddhist community. ‘Love Like Ours’ shows how they navigate these challenges and impart valuable lessons to their children about how to live your life when you are in the minority.

Nai Chi

Beautiful drawings of long-limbed women draped in fantastic-looking gowns adorn the walls of Nay Chi’s home in rural Myanmar. ‘These outfits are not for me’ she says with a twinkle in her eye, ‘but the models will look stunning in them!’ Her mobility may be constrained but Nay Chi is not the type to let incapacity hold her back from becoming a fashion designer. And, as she moves her body determinedly from sewing machine to drawing board and downstairs to where the neighborhood kids play ‘catwalk’ and Granny lies dozing, we cannot fail to be infected by her disarming honesty and indefatigable lust for life.
