Yakutia - Between Worlds

by Vladimir Kocharyan - Yakutia

Pitch

Sakha (Yakoutia) is the only country in federal Russia with its own independent film industry. With a population of around a million, Yakoutia produces over 20 feature films of all styles and genres for its domestic market every year. The film’s director, Vladimir Kocharyan, was born in the early 1990s to an Armenian father and a Yakut mother. Ten years ago, he left his home country to study filmmaking in St. Petersbourg. After a long break, he returned home and set off on a long journey throughout his native republic. The aim of his journey was to explore the roots and meaning of Yakut cinema.

“In my opinion, cinema has always been the mirror of society, a reflection on the diverse, deep processes which shape it. My film is an attempt to show how the Yakut cinema has awakened the cultural spirit of the Sakha people. It’s also an attempt to reconnect with the land of my forefathers on my mother’s side.” Vladimir Kocharyan
