by Nader Saeivar - Iran

In Iran, Tarlan, a retired dance teacher, is witness to a murder committed by an influential government personality. When the police refuse to investigate, she has to choose between giving in to political pressure or risking her reputation and her livelihood to seek justice.
"‘The Witness’ is a reflection upon the present day condition of Iranian society, illustrating the way the government wields power and how their citizens have to submit to these policies, even at the cost of their dignity. Confronted with a repressive regime, those who strive to maintain their dignity and their humanity are often eliminated, while the truth must be destroyed. A protagonist in this story is a private citizen who collaborates with foreign governments in order to circumvent economic sanctions on behalf of the Iranian regime. As long as individuals like him continue to act as intermediaries, they remain essential for the regime." Nader Saeivar
