Wang Bing
Wang Bing was born in 1967 in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, China. After studying photography at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts and then film at the Beijing Film Academy, he began his career as an independent filmmaker in the late 1990s. He made his mark in 2002 with his nine-hour documentary West of the Railways, a poignant chronicle of industrial decline in China.
Since then, he has directed numerous documentaries and experimental works, combining cinema, video installation, and photography, and is considered one of the leading voices in contemporary Chinese documentary cinema. His trilogy Youth was selected for competition at major festivals: Spring in Cannes (2023), Torments in Locarno, and Return to the Country in Venice (2024).
