Maha Haj was born and raised in Nazareth. She now lives in Haifa, where she works as a screenwriter, script doctor, and production designer, notably on films such as Elia Suleiman's The Time That Remains, Ziad Doueiri's The Attack, and Raphael Nadjari's The Strange Course of Things. In 2009, she directed her first short film, Oranges. In 2016, her first feature film, Personal Affairs, was selected for Un Certain Regard at Cannes and received the Critics' Prize at the CineMed Festival. In 2022, her second feature film, Mediterranean Fever, won the Best Screenplay award in Un Certain Regard and was selected to represent Palestine at the Academy Awards.
