Lee Chang-dong  

Lee Chang-dong was born in Daegu in 1954. After graduating with a degree in Korean language and literature in 1980, he published his first novel, The Booty, in 1983. He began his career in cinema in 1993, working as a screenwriter and assistant on the film Star Island by Park Kwang-su, one of the founders of the Korean New Wave. He then wrote the screenplay for another Park Kwang-su film, A Single Park. He then moved on to directing. His first two films were selected and won awards at numerous festivals. He served as Minister of Culture for several months.
