After the death of her mother, Hsiao-yang has to take care of her family on her own, while at the same time juggling with a job in a fast-food restaurant and evening classes. A delinquent for years, her brother, Hsiao-fang has started to pose a serious problem since he and his friends have begun associating with the local mafia. Faced with all the violence around her, Hsiao-yang finds some comfort in the manga Daughter of the Nile whose heroine seems very like herself ...

“I wrote this story to make a stand against the growing prosperity of Taiwan and the problem that a developing metropolis can pose. Some people obtain advantages from this type of social change whereas others get nothing.” Hou Hsiao-hsien

Hou Hsiao-hsien signs this moving portrait of Taipei’s lost youth whose melancholy has replaced the hedonism of its beginnings.
