Majid is a young bread peddler who dreams of glory. He submits his poetry to a major magazine in the passionate hope of being published. One day he cornes across several pages of Victor Hugo's "Les Misérables". The book is a revelation, but he is too poor to buy the book or pay for a library card. So he steals a volume from his brother-in-law's bookshelf and temporarily replaces the coveted Hugo novel with it. Unfortunately, the brother-in-law had hidden a check in the book Majid has swiped. When the youth tries to retrieve the book he finds it has been checked out. It's only the beginning of Majid 's troubles.
