In the North-East part of India, the mining town of Jharia has one of the largest coal deposits in the country. For about a century, the mines are ravaged by devastating fires which get out of control. From a seam to another, the flames erode the ground, burst out from the earth and spread thick toxic smokes all over the area. In the villages close-by, the ground subsides, walls crack and houses collapse. For the inhabitants, coal which once was their wealth has become a malediction. In view of this catastrophe, the government is concerned to provide the mining with main services and decides a policy of vast evacuation. More than 500 000 persons are affected.
This film is a portrait of a place, where cohabitation between man and his environment has become a problem. A place where men and women are at the mercy of forces beyond their means: the forces of nature and the forces of men exploiting it.
