Yosuke is separated from his wife and son, and he becomes jobless. His old friend Taro, a tramp living on the river banks of Tokyo, told him he has hidden a gold Buddha stolen from a temple years before. It is in a house close to a red bridge, by the Sea of Japan. Taro requests him to collect it back. As a counterpart of the narration of his journey, he will offer him the Buddha. Taro suddenly dies. Intrigued by Taro's story and faithful to his promise, Yosuke decides to leave for Noto Peninsula. He recognises the “house under the red bridge” and sees a young woman coming out of it, the beautiful Saeko.
