Khmerica

Joker, Kookie and Sokha are ' Khmericans': Cambodian refugees who grew up in the United States and were deported back to Cambodia after serving a prison sentence. We follow this trio in their daily lives as they reconnect with their new Khmer families, caught between what's left of their past and the future they are trying to build. - 'Showing the reality of exile means venturing into the in-between: that unclear space where Khmericans live, suspended between the United States and Cambodia. Khmerica is the name of the transitional state geographical, psychological, identity-based where nothing is stable, where each person tries to redefine what 'being at home' may still mean. Wrenched from their American lives, Joker, Kookie and Sokha find themselves propelled into a country whose language and social codes they do not know. Cambodia, supposedly a homeland, becomes for them both an anchor point and a territory of strangeness. In this shifting in-between space, each of our three characters inhabits that divide in their own way.'
