Amreen had been a housewife for 18 years up until a freak accident during Holi (the Indian Festival of Colours) left her husband, Imtiaz, permanently disabled. Forced to become the breadwinner and to ensure the education of their three children, Amreen has to earn a living from now on. Her neighbour, Sarita, who cooks for several families, is looking for someone to fill in for her during her two-month leave of absence. Amreen, seizes the opportunity despite her husband's resistance - he refuses to see her work outside their home. However, her Muslim identity and the fact that she wears a headscarf are major barriers to her being hired as most of the households where she could work are Hindu. One family, Parul and Vinod, is an exception; they are open-minded, and prioritize healthy meals over any religious consideration. Their only demand is observance of a strictly vegan diet, a world totally unfamiliar to Amreen. - Full Plate' follows Amreen's difficulties, caught between the demands of her new job and the responsibilities she continues to shoulder at home. |
