Kurak

A young woman, working secretly as a webcam model, becomes the victim of blackmail by a corrupt police officer. Terrified at the idea of being publicly exposed, she is forced into an intimate relationship with him. A mother whose 18-year-old daughter committed suicide after being drugged and raped images of the assault were shared online - desperately seeks justice but comes up against an ineffectual investigation. Their fates are interwoven with that of Jamila, a top TV journalist, famous for championing gender equality yet also the mistress of an influential politician. - Kurak' is a scathing indictment of the patriarchal social set-up and the mindset that perpetuates violence against women. It shows how old-school misogynistic values and the corruption of the nouveaux riche combine to maintain this oppression. It seeks to give symbolic voice to Kyrgyz women who remain ignored and unanswered in the face of violence and is intended as an uncompromising film, a 'patchwork' of tragic stories that aims to awaken people's consciences and call for justice in Kyrgyz society.
