The Fishers of Meinmahla |
|
Meinmahla Island, located in the protected wetlands of the Ayeyarwady delta, is home to abundant wildlife - in particular the saltwater crocodile. Braving the obvious dangers that lurk in these muddy creeks, whole families of fishers spend weeks looking for the crabs that thrive in the dense mangroves. Focusing on a couple who have to leave their two school-age daughters in their village when they go fishing in this huge nature reserve, this fascinating documentary opens a window onto an entire floating community that struggles together. Watching these bold fishers work, worry, laugh and remember, one quickly becomes aware of their deep relationship with the spiritual and natural worlds, and with every living thing in this both threatening and stunningly beautiful waterscape. - 'It was demanding work but there were many rewards. The community we encountered many of them survivors of Cyclone Nargis which devastated the delta and its population in 2008 genuinely embodied kindness in the face of an invisible karma…one endowed with fearsome teeth.' |
