Luo Hongwu returns to Kaili, his hometown, from which he fled several years ago. He starts to search for a woman he once loved whom he has never been able to forget. She said her name was Wan Quiwen… - 'I always try to capture the atmosphere that emanates from the places where I shoot to bring out its true essence. In order to do that, I nearly always change my scene on the spot before shooting. When everyone on the set is seeking that essential truth, it really fascinates me. The story as such is always somewhat banal. In this film, it's just about a man who goes looking for a woman. But what I wanted to capture was emotion. While we were filming, I forced myself not to shoot scenes that were too explanatory. I realized that they would only lead me to plain storytelling… Filming is always very hard. I have to feel endangered, almost as if I have to escape death in order to be able to continue to create. I often say to myself the film is doomed and yet the next day a new idea comes to mind. This revives the film, giving it new life. I think that challenging yourself to step outside of your comfort zone, sometimes at the risk of 'destroying' yourself, is necessary for |
