Leila et les loups |
|
Leila, a Lebanese student, travels through time and space to challenge the colonial, male-centered version of history presented by her boyfriend, Rafic. This is the only feature film to span 80 years of the history of the Middle East from a feminist point of view. Leila and the Wolves conducts an archeological excavation of the collective memory of Palestinian and Lebanese women, revealing their widely-ignored role. By the end of her journey, Leila realizes that patriarchy oppres- - ses men too. - 'In Leila and the Wolves', I revisited eight decades of women fighting in various historical circumstances, from the uprisings against the British administration in Palestine in the 1920s to their participation at the barricades of the armed conflict in the Lebanese civil war in the 1970s and 1980s. It was a way of acknowledging the heavy price that women pay for their commitment. They are rejected by society and abandoned by their boyfriends who prefer arranged marriages. They are sacrificed twice whatever side of the political spectrum they belong to.' |
