Lost in the crowds in Tokyo, a man is going to meet Mahiro, his twelve-year-old daughter whom he has not seen in years. Their meeting is cool at first but they promise to meet up again. What Mahiro does not know is that her 'father' is in fact an actor with the Family romance company, hired by her mother. - 'The film's inner storm is not perceptible on the surface. Reality, truth and fiction are intertwined. There truly is a storm at the heart of the film, but to all intents and purposes, the sea is calm… Man has always needed to play a part. Especially people who lead a public life. But that is true as well with regard to each person's place in the family and the way they all act out a given role… What interests me is that Yuichi plays not one part but several. For example, he has to play the father of a twelve-year-old girl while at the same time being a railway employee forced to apologise to his passengers for a human error… Family Romance' is a melancholic film dominated by a profound feeling of solitude.'
