After his son dies accidentally, Jia leaves everything he's got to go to his child's killer's home town and wait for him to come out of prison. Jia paints coffins for a living. When Li, an old friend who had been living in a retirement home, dies, Jia loses his only friend in town. At the same time, a teenage girl, Seven, and her mother move in nearby. These new neighbours make his isolation more bearable. They get to know each other.
When Jia is with Seven, his gloomy heart becomes gradually more cheerful. Just when he starts to give up the idea of seeking revenge, he is affected by the way Seven is bullied at school.
He is on the way to redemption. After a series of events, in particular being arrested and Seven's mother committing suicide, Jia comes to terms with himself and his environment.
After sending Seven to look for her birth father, Jia burns the coffin he had painted for himself and leaves town.
