In Korea, during Japanese colonial domination, many women were raped by Japanese soldiers and put to work in forced prostitution for the benefit of the soldiers. In 1971, after a painful war, Bangladesh obtained its independence. Numerous women were exposed to war crimes during this conflict, but their story is still not well-known. They are known as “Birangana” which means “brave women”. The first president of Bangladesh showed respect for them. However, these women received no compensation and were persecuted and rejected in their hometowns.
Originally from Bangladesh, later gaining Korean citizenship in 2009, Shekh al Mamun “made this documentary to allow women who were victims of wartime rape and sexual slavery in Bangladesh to use their own voices to tell their story. By transcending time and space through the voices of activists working with victimised women in Korea, he also aimed at exploring the question of why women should suffer in war and why countries which commit sexually-orientated war crimes do not apologise for them to the full.”
