One beautiful summer’s day, Tomoko, a 12-year-old girl, goes to the town of Hiroshima. Her teacher has in fact asked her to give a talk on the terrible event which took place in this town. Equipped with a little notebook in which she takes down notes, she starts her research in the Peace museum. There she finds the bronze statue dedicated to the chil- dren. This statue represents a crane, accompanied by a little girl. Tomoko is mesmerised by the multitude of multicoloured paper birds created by children from all over the world and grouped around the statue. Suddenly, a paper bird shimmers, lights up and in a flash of light, the little girl from the statue comes to life, in the sight of a deligh- ted Tomoko. This mysterious, little girl, Sadoko, then tells Tomako her story, that of a child from Hiroshima after the war....

“I think that a cartoon, whether people like it or not, whether it’s a great success or not, has to educate the people who watch it.... In Japan, we don’t pass on enough to children the reality of events which have taken place. People who have been through the experience of war should recount what they have lived through.”
