In Kabul at the end of the 1980s, smart young Qodrat earns a living dealing in the resale of cinema tickets and in that way can go and watch his favourite Bollywood films. After the police catch up with him, he finds himself in the orphanage where he imagines himself as the hero of his cult films, fighting beside his new-found friends against the rebel invasion threatening them. His past goes back through the history of Afghanistan over the last 40 years, seen through the eyes of a young, innocent orphan. It’s the story of a child caught up in a war he did not belong to. That is exactly what I feel today as a person living in Afghanistan... You cannot put the pre- sent into question without knowing about the past. There are plenty of films about Afghanistan today and I’d bet that the whole world knows that there is conflict over there. What I am interested in is burrowing into the past and going back to the source of the conflict.” Shahrbanoo Sadat
