Lu Yanshi, a political prisoner, has been freed at the end of the Cultural Revolution. When he gets home, he discovers that his wife is suffering from amnesia. She no longer recognizes him and waits every day for her husband to return, without realizing that he is already by her side.

Today the younger generation have difficulty in estimating how much destruction the Cultural Revolution has caused in people’s daily family lives. To my mind, the scene between the father and daughter, where she admits what she is guilty of, is crucial because, nowadays, it occurs more and more frequently in China. Citizens who were encouraged to betray their near relations are now old and want to unburden their consciences before they die. They apologise in public.” Zhang Yimou
