Lao Yu reaches the river bank where his son disappeared while trying to rescue one of his pupils. Lao Yu junior, whose relationship with his father was full of clashes, had come to work as a primary school teacher in this remote village two years before. While investigations are going on to find his son's body, Lao Yu settles in the village, speaks with the school head teacher, and becomes fond of Xiaofen, the young girl who caused the tragedy. She is an orphan brought up by her aunt, and she works hard at school and at the farm. Yao Lu, a prosperous business man from the city, takes time to think and question himself; he gradually gets closer to this son he knew so little about, however too late. For him, a rich city dweller, it is also the encounter with poor but proud farmers.

“This is the story of a father looking for his son, and it is also the soul of the son trying to return to the world to find his father. It is a story about guilt, salvation and love. By telling this story, I also wanted to depict the Chinese rural world changing fast.”
