During the Chinese Cultural Revolution in Guizhou province, eleven years old Wanh Han lives with his parents and his sister in a courtyard shared by other families. In day time the parents work in the factory and the children are at school. In the evening, everyone remembers the past and feels content with small pleasures. Wang Han is selected to lead the daily gym session at school. All he can think about is to get a new shirt. He gets a white short-sleeved shirt from his mother, which is almost immediately stolen by a bleeding man on the river bank. Scared and fascinated at the same time, Wang Han and his friends promise to keep the secret and not to reveal where the fugitive accused of murder is hiding.
