Roshane Saidnattar who escaped the death camps of Cambodia, meets chief theoretician of Red Khmer power Khieu Samphân. Facing Pol Pot theoretician’s denial, the director and her mother find the strength to speak. Survive: In the Heart of the Khmer Rouge madness intertwines the memories of the director, the story of her mother and archives mostly unknown, in parallel with an exceptional interview of Khieu Samphân. With its intimate echo, the film reveals a part of the madness which devastated the whole country.
“It recalls the history of this period but its real topic is silence on History and the way to be invented today in order to tell things, to allow the Khmer people to look at each other and live again having got over this tragic period of their history. “ R. Saidnattar
