Five musicians want to spend summer in the countryside in order to rest and practice music. They reach a small village where they stay as paying guests. Quite soon, the natives go back to their daily routine: they breed cattle, women quarrel in the village square, men eat their meals and drink with songs. The musicians’ holidays revolve around music, physical activities and general conversations. There are only superficial exchanges between the summer visitors and their hosts. However, a young woman feels attracted to one of the musicians. The young man gives her a record when he goes away. Iosseliani tenderly focuses on the gestures of the farmers, as well as on the rehearsals of the musicians, however he never makes an idyllic portrait.“Pastorale” indeed refers to pieces of village music, as much as it evokes the rural way of life.
