Athirah’s life changes radically when another woman enters her husband’s life. At a time where polygamy is largely accepted by society, Athirah struggles alone, hurt and humiliated. Brimming with energy, she overcomes her frustration by starting a business that soon becomes prosperous. Her adolescent elder son Ucu tries to understand what happens to his family. He falls in love with Ida. To seduce the girl is not easy for him, all the more so as he finds out that his mother is again pregnant. Based on a true story, this portrayal of an Indonesian family from south Celebes in the sixties is still relevant today. “I always felt close to my mother… Emma is a story based on true characters about how a mother must face the realities of marriage in the specific culture of the Buginese people, an ethnical group from south Celebes, where society is ruled by men. This woman respects life and love… Emma is a kind of tribute to strong women believing in the unity of their family, just like my mother who recently passed away.” Riri Riza
