Nepal in 2001. A ceasefire puts an end to the civil war raging across the country. In a northern village people joyfully welcome this truce. Prakash and Kiran, inseparable friends though belonging to different casts, use this lull to take care of a black hen, hoping to earn money by selling its eggs. Unfortunately the hen disappears. The two kids start searching for it in a country devastated by the civil war, where the fragile peace is gradually replaced by tyranny.
“I was born in a remote village from northern Nepal. I grew up with the smell of pine tree, a view on green meadows and icy winds from the Himalayan high peaks. However, this enchanting environment was hiding a far darker reality. Undermined by poverty, illiteracy and taboos, the society in which I lived was also deeply affected by the social class hierarchy… Kalo Pothi is a story about friendship, the Nepalese society of the time with its archaic practices. They still rule the Nepalese society’s way of life today. “
This is a village chronicle, between childhood insouciance and real danger.
