In a small village from Gujarat, four women dare to confront men and ancestral traditions enslaving them. Supported by their friendship and desire for freedom, they brave the demons within them, and yearn for love and for a better place.
“I chose to tell the story of these ordinary women with extraordinary destiny in order to give my female characters a voice able to observe, understand and react... We went and visited some thirty villages around Bhuj in Gujarat and in Rajasthan. We were not allowed to shoot because the villagers did not approve a woman director at the head of a team, wearing pants, not covering her head, and openly talking with men. Unexpectedly it is the young generation of men, those who actually rule the place, who found it the most difficult to accept an emancipated woman as the boss of the team. One of them told me: “If a woman like you ever enters our village it will pervert our women.” Nothing is ever acquired in a rural society ruled by customary laws.
