A promise, a horse headed old hurdy-gurdy badly damaged and a song taken for lost have lead singer Urna to go back to Mongolia. Her grand-mother was forced to destroy her beloved violin during the turbulent period of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Old Mongol song “Two horses of Genghis Khan” was engraved on the neck of the violin. The head and neck of the violin are the only parts remaining after the Cultural Revolution. When Urma reaches Ulaanbaatar she takes the remaining parts of the violin to Hicheengui, a famous hurdy-gurdy maker, who will give a new body to this old instrument. Then, she travels through Mongolia in search of the song’s missing lines. She is deeply disappointed as nobody seems to know this old Mongol song any more.
“Symbolically the broken violin represents Mongolia, a country also broken and divided; it represents the separated brothers of Mongolia’s inner and outer parts which today are gradually brought back together.” B. Davaa. To take the road and restore the memory of a nomadic people.
