April 3rd 1948. A riot getting out of hand on Jeju Island is suppressed by the government. The military invades a calm and peaceful village. Running away from the army, the villagers shelter in a cave. They try to survive in their hiding place, but hope seems as dark as the cave itself. As time passes, the refugees start suffering from illness and hunger. The situation does not seem to change. One day, a farmer worrying for his pigs wants to return to his farm, but the others hold him back. In a constant state of concern and anxiety, people wonder if they should move out to shelter up in the mountain, or remain in the cave.
